Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God

Jonathan Edwards was an evangelical minister of The Great Awakening. His most famous sermon was “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God”. He delivered this sermon in Enfield, Connecticut, on Sunday, July 8, 1741. He used a lot of analogy and repetition in this book to evoke strong emotions in his listeners. This sermon was meant to make his listeners believe that anything they did on Earth was the most important thing they would ever do, and if they didn’t do the right things, they would go to Hell. He also reminded them of the power God has and how he can easily do away with sinners.

During the settlement of the colony, people were discouraged, but kept going because of their belief that “God’s providence” would protect them. The Declaration of Independence is a historical document that was drafted by Thomas Jefferson on July 4, 1776. This important document states that the United States gained its independence from Great Britain. The Puritans believed in "conditional allegiance" and they believed that all allegiance should be to God. The Pledge of Allegiance, that we still use today, is part of conditional allegiance which came from The Declaration of Independence.
